PPF or ceramic coating, or both?
Short answer
They do different jobs. Film is a physical layer that absorbs rock chips and light scratches. A ceramic coating is a thin, hard layer that adds gloss and makes cleaning easier, but it doesn't stop chips. Many people do both: film on the areas that take hits, and coating on the rest. When both are done, film goes on first.
Quick facts
| Stops rock chips | PPF yes, coating no |
|---|---|
| Self-heals light marks | PPF yes |
| Easier washing | Both; STEK film is hydrophobic |
| Order when doing both | Film first, coating over it |
| Time in shop for both | Adds a day to the PPF appointment; a one-day Full Front becomes about two days |
What does each one actually do?
Think of film as a screen protector and a coating as a glossy, slick finish on top of the paint. The screen protector takes the scratches. The finish makes everything shine and helps dirt slide off.

Why do people choose both?
Film usually covers the front of the car and other impact areas. A coating covers everything else, including wheels and glass, so the whole car is easier to clean.
When both are done, film goes on first and the coating goes over it. The films APC chooses already have a built-in coating, so coating over them isn't needed. See Can you ceramic coat over PPF?
How long does each one last?
STEK DYNOshield carries a 10-year manufacturer warranty with proper care. Coating lifespans depend on the product; see how long ceramic coating lasts.
How APC Auto Spa does it
APC installs STEK film and Ceramic Pro coatings. Adding a ceramic coating package to a PPF package adds a day to the appointment. For example, a one-day Full Front becomes about two days.
