What is paint protection film (clear bra), and how does it work?

Short answer

Paint protection film (PPF), often called clear bra, is a clear, flexible film applied over your car's paint. It works like a screen protector for your phone: it takes the rock hits, grit and light scratches so the paint underneath doesn't. Good film also heals light marks with heat and resists staining. It can't stop collision damage or fix chips that are already there.

How does PPF protect paint?

The film is thick and soft enough to absorb an impact. When a pebble hits the front of your car on the freeway, the film takes the hit instead of the paint. It's the same idea as a screen protector: the protector gets the scuff, the screen stays clean.

It also shields paint from road debris and grit, light scratches, and stains from bugs, bird droppings and tree sap.

What can't PPF do?

Film isn't armor. It won't prevent collision damage, and a very hard hit can still get through. It also can't repair damage that's already in the paint. Chips that exist before install stay as they are under the film. See Will PPF fix rock chips I already have?

Why is it called a clear bra?

Years ago, people protected the front of their cars with black vinyl covers called car bras. Clear film does the same job without hiding the paint, so the name stuck.

How is PPF different from ceramic coating?

Film is a physical layer that absorbs impacts. A ceramic coating is a thin, hard layer that adds gloss and makes cleaning easier, but it doesn't stop rock chips. Many people choose both. See PPF or ceramic coating, or both?

How APC Auto Spa does it

APC Auto Spa is a STEK certified installer and has installed STEK film since STEK came to the US. APC's clear film is STEK DYNOshield, which is self-healing and hydrophobic.

Every PPF install is reported to the vehicle's CARFAX history, so a future buyer can see the paint was protected. Compare coverage at APC's paint protection film page.

Frequently asked questions

Is clear bra the same thing as PPF?

Can you see paint protection film?
At normal viewing distance it blends in. On close inspection you may see an edge where the film couldn't be tucked. See Does PPF self-heal, yellow, or show?
Does PPF stop every rock chip?

Will future buyers know my car has PPF?
APC reports every PPF install to the vehicle's CARFAX history.
